History

In the early 1900’s, it was decided that the growing community to the north of Cape Town deserved its own school. The result of this forward thinking was the inception of MPS in 1911. Far from being an auspicious start, the first lessons were held in an old boat house at the entrance to Milnerton Lagoon. The first headmistress and only teacher at the time, Miss Baker, was a resolute woman who was responsible for teaching every child in the school. The number of children enrolled was 25 from grade 1 to 7. By 1953 the school had outgrown the boat house and had to be moved to the town hall in Janssen Road. Soon after that the old boat house was condemned and demolished.

After a few months of temporary residence in the town hall, MPS moved to its present site. The pupils were housed in prefabricated classrooms while the construction of the school buildings were under way. The building works were completed in 1956. As the years turned into decades the school grew and grew. New classroom annexes and a swimming pool were added in 1968. The school dropped its dual-medium status in 1972 to become one of the premier English-medium primary schools on the western seaboard. In 1993, Milnerton Primary joined the information super-highway with the opening of its state of the art Computer Centre. Along with the rest of South Africa, Milnerton Primary School celebrated the birth of the Rainbow Nation in 1994. We were able to open our doors, drop our Model C status, and become a school that was truly embracing of our culturally diverse and vibrant community. 2011 was a landmark year as we celebrated our centenary, making us one of only a handful of educational institutions (including Universities) that are more than 100 years old. History has afforded us a well-deserved reputation as a child friendly, family school and an island of excellence.
